Timber merchants still open?

I need (if possible) some lengths of 2 * 2 sawn timber.

Travis Perkins has shut down and is only delivering to essential services.

Does anyone know of a Builders' or Timber Merchant which is still open?

I believe Jewson are still delivering, but the yards/shops were shut when I last checked

Try your local ones? Here Ridgeons (Huws Gray) has shut down, but Bedford Sawmill is still open.

Just checked round and TP, Jewson, Ridgeons et al are closed and only taking orders for delivery from essential services.

I may well consider myself essential, but I doubt that will carry much weight.

Now trying to work out how to best rip down some 6 * 2 offcuts. I have seen that resting them on scrap wood allows you to rip with a circular saw. My problem now is clamping them whilst ripping.

Just ordered some treated timber using C&C - to make some garden things while otherwise staying at home. Awaiting a text message - they are still saying up to four hours. I am not holding my breath.

Was actually a bit surprised they had any stock.

Would have gone for delivery but next available is 02/04/2020.

Stick a B&B sign in your window, then TP will deliver to you ...

If you haven't got clamps or a saw table the easiest way is probably to screw into them from underneath, through whatever it is you're going to work on, with something sacrificial between. Or screw a board underneath and fix that down. To state the bleedin' obvious: don't saw into the screws, don't take the riving knife off the saw, and don't risk a trip to casualty!

SMS came through - drove the couple of miles, pillock coming out of the shopping area did his best to cut the corner and take my car's nose off, but missed.

Area round Wickes' door barriered off. Man asked who I was - gave name. He went in and pulled trolley out, opened up barriers, went inside and closed doors. I collected trolley, went to car and transferred timber. Took trolley back, he told me where to leave it. I started wiping down - he said, don't bother, he does it every time. And off home.

Given the effective separation and incredibly quiet traffic, I find it difficult to believe I have not abided by the spirit of the regs. And what I want to make is to enable us to grow more veg at home - which is surely sensible all round?

If you have a bit of flat surface (ply offcut, workbench you don't mind abusing a bit), then just screw some stops to the surface that you can butt the scraps up to them to keep them in place while you saw. You can se the saw depth to just over the depth required (putting a small score in the surface you are cutting on) or set to a tad over half depth and cut from both sides.

Also a sawboard can be good for freehanding straight cuts in stuff:

Wickes seems to be the only reasonably local option.

I now have to consider if driving 10-15 miles each way counts as "essential".

Much discussion about this but going to my local TP (less than a mile) would seem more reasonable than driving to the next town over to pick up some wood. For the fence. Just to stabilise it a bit because it is rattling, Also to finish the job so I can fix some batten to it, paint the batten and then start fixing climbing plants to it.
