Tap washer

I needed to change the basin tap washer. I got a half inch washer out of an old pack, but I was surprised to find that it doesn't fit. The tap head has a sort of cup the washer fits into, and the washer is a bit too big.

I'm pretty sure it's this one:

I suppose the correct washer size might be 3/8"? But then why is it marketed as 1/2"? And in any case, I don't think the difference is as much as 25%.

Is it a "cup" with a dimple in the middle? If so you might be in need of a Barking Grohe Washer which is rounded at the bottom. Eg

If so I've sometimes bodgered an ordinary one by shaving the bottom edge so it fits into the cup. But then I've also met old taps where I had to shave what purported to be a BG washer because the "cup" was distorted/corroded. Or it might of course have just been me who was ;)

There's no dimple. The cup is just smaller than the washer!

I turned the old washer over, and reassembled it. Otherwise, I'd take a photo.
