Stuck shut upvc door with multipoint lock

Does anyone have knowledge of manipulating the internal mechanism of a GU 30/92 old style gearbox lock. AI has confirmed the symptoms to be a broken mechanism [ very common on this lock] and suggested a locksmith will be able to retract the multipoint hooks internally without any damage to the door. I can't find any further information on manipulating the mechanism to retract the hooks.

Have you had the handles off yet?

This is a common failure mode; where the casting fails. Mine was with a SI Siegenia Drive Gear. I would imagine they are similar.

I got over this problem with a tilt and turn window lock, by using a Allen key and mole-grips to engage with the rack and move it into the unlock position.

If it has been in regular use then it should move, but I have also come across one I was unable to shift.

To save a bit of cash and the issues of fitting mechanisms that aren't the original you might be able to get replacement gear housings. You then need to drill out the old rivets and replace with the new screws provided.

Yes. The euro cylinder is operating correctly, but the handle is free to midpoint , then wont move any further.

We had a problem which sounds similar in symptoms. It wasn’t the lock, at least it wasn’t broken.

Either way, this may help:

Try lifting the door as you open it, either by the handle our a lever at the bottom.

If, as we had, the hinges had slipped ( ours are adjustable ), once open, you can realign the door so the hooks lift clear without the extra ‘lift’.

The hooks only need to just ‘catch’ for the door to stay put but a little lift and you may be ok.

You should be able to adjust the hinges while it's closed, that may make it openable? e.g. my flag hinges (trojan?) can move up/down/in/out all on a single Allen bolt

Thanks for the replies. I have tried lifting and pushing/ pulling the door but nothing has worked. I have a local locksmith booked for tomorrow.

Update

It was just a jammed hook and the local locksmith freed it, adjusted the striker plates and lubricated for a very reasonable charge. He also gave me advice on regular maintenance and lubrication. Result.

It might depend on where the lock is. It seems that graphite is not suitable for locks exposed to the weather (padlocks, bike locks, etc - even, perhaps, car door locks), but is fine for locks protected from the weather. I used it from the inside of my external doors, so it should be ok.

What makes PTFE /stick/ to a surface if it's non-stick??!! Looking at some MSDS info on the internet, PTFE in lock lubricants is carried mainly in C7 alkanes with a dash of C9 iso-alkanes (

I occasionally free a front door pin-tumbler lock by spraying the key with WD40 and working it in and out. Is that so bad?

WD40 is not a lubricant, but if it works for you and continues to do so who am I to argue? It might be just that the solvent nature of WD40 is dissolving thick and dry grease enough for the lock to move for a while.

But if you look at some of the Youtube videos where they take common locks apart and the 'miniature' size of some of the moving component parts you will see why a thick oil or grease is not recommended, or anything else that airborne dirt can stick to. There can be two failure mechanisms - a build up of gunk stopping unlocking or a the mechanism sticking and failing to lock properly

As one who uses mtb components in sub-zero temps I am used to using specific components that suit extreme environments. My recommendation was very specific and not general.

What did the lock manufacturer use to lubricate their product?

I would try to use the same.

Possible because they use nothing in the lock keyway. Something the lock subsequently turns may have grease, or a handle may have grease.
