I need to replace a steering joint on a tractor for which the parts are no longer available, I am going to look for a suitable substitute but wonder if the taper on these ball joints are a standard one?

Difinitely different tapers for different vehicles, but how many different ones I haven't a clue.

Yes indeed. They can also differ with different production years of the same vehicle.
Guess how I know this :-(

Next question then: is there a more sensible way of measuring taper other than doing trig on small diameter, bibig diameter and length between?
