I've just stripped out the actual disc from a HDD that had expired, just in case of the unlikely event that it was recovered from the skip and someone managed to extract personal info from it.
It will make a nice coaster, or bird scarer, or heliograph, whatever, but what's it actually made of. The term 'spinning rust' is sometimes used, but is it actually just that. It feels metallic, 'rings' when tapped, but isn't obviously magnetic. If it is iron oxide, then Fe2O3, or Fe3O4, and how's it made - some sort of hot pressing of powder, or how?
