SOT: profile error in Chrome

Do you store passwords etc in chrome?

In any case, you can manually copy your Chrome user profile folder.

chrome://version

Profile Path: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

Apparently, if you have OneDrive installed, the path may vary, and this could be why the profile is not getting picked up. Maybe you just configured OneDrive, or, you enabled the OneDrive Backup or something.

But judging by the default path, unlike a Firefox with a variable path, the Google one in the example, seems quite consistent.

Summary: Check "chrome://version" and see if the value is altered. Look for evidence of OneDrive interference.

From where it is to somewhere else. This makes it easier to get the old profile back again, if you need it.

I can see where your problems are coming from.

There are people who can't view the appdata folder (which is hidden by default), but they just leave everything in default settings, and by and large it all just works.

Your gain in privacy, through pretty random fiddling, is far more than cancelled out by the upset you suffer when you break stuff.

So is the bottom line here that I should just ignore the warning message about the profile error?

No, the bottom line is: When you think "How do I delink these?", don't do it. You're liable to break stuff in unexpected ways.

A reinstall of Chrome may fix the profile issue. Try that, and if it doesn't work, then you may have to delete the old profile and try again.

There is - but by default it is a hidden folder.

They are not linked as such.

When you install OneDrive it moves the location of some of the standard user folders like Documents, Desktop & Pictures, and places them in the OneDrive folder so those folders are then synched with cloud storage.

So before OneDrive your docs could be in:

\Users\Your_profile_name\Documents

After one drive

\Users\Your_profile_name\OneDrive\Documents

Note that the AppData folder contains three sub folders usually: Local, LocalLow, and Roaming. Most app configuration data is either in the Roaming or the Local branches of that. Chrome has a fair bit of stuff in the Local one normally, but that is not usually included in the OneDrive synched data which mainly affects your user folders:
