Fitting a new roof yesterday and today for a customer. There is a cable hanging out of the garage wall - "can you leave that there, I'll sort it, there will be a new light going in when you are finished".

So today he is up his ally step ladder, in the damp, with a pair of cable snips. He is cutting the cable he says, to pull it through the wall. I ask if it is live. "Well, it might be, we'll soon find out" So he cuts through the cable. Remarkably no sparks or shocks. Maybe it was dead after all.

3pm, and it starts raining and getting dark. That's funny the lights dont work in this garage. I carry on, thinking nothing of it. At 5pm, he comes out "will you have a look at my boiler, it hasnt come on".

I look - no power to it. Check the Contact breakers - two consumer units, one all on, the other had tripped the CB. So, go back to the cut wire he had left dangling in the garage, make it safe, then turn on the power. OK, lights and heating now working. Tested the dangling wire - live. So he had knowingly cut through a wire that he knew may have been live, on a set of aluminium ladders, in the damp, with a pair of snips that had insulation tape wrapped round the handles.

The bloke has nine lives.

Alan.

Sounds like he's a professional builder :-)

Make sure you have a contract payable by his next of kin.

The tape-wrapped handles just make it the perfect story, somehow.

Didn't the ally ladders have insulated rubber feet? ;)

Last year my Paramedic daughter got a call to a tower block in a rough area, call was for a 'stabbing'. Screen in the ambulance updated this to 'stabbing & electrocution' on the way there. This was at 7:15am. They thought it was some kind of drug gang related thing.

Turned out a bloke had been woken up at 7:00am by a faulty smoke alarm (mains powered), He apparently stood barefoot on a set of kitchen steps & cut the mains cable with a pair of metal scissors!

The electric shock knocked him off the steps and as he fell, he stabbed himself in the leg with the scissors!

They gave him oxygen & patched up his leg, then took him to A&E. He went back home after a check up.

If it were RCD protected and the MCB switched off - so safe to work on - the act of cutting or stripping it can trip the RCD, if you short earth to neutral.

not really.

You almost always always get a live neutral short doing that, and if he had got a jolt, it would probably spasm him off the ladder.

when I were a lad., moans shocks were rather too commonplace. Very few people died, and a lot more learned to exercise precautions.

Wonderful stuff AC, only lethal sometimes. I always like this joke about gambling: The less you bet the more you loose when you win.

Indeed. 'Laber is for Loosers' is my new slogan for Our Glorious Leader

And they've brought the Dear Leader back as an election gag, too. Hope it helps!
