Slight OT ... pipeline practicalities

again it appears SE England is running out of water ... "Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman says water companies need to prepare now for the possibility."



Now to any sane person this would mean spending money on developing an infrastructure to properly provide water, but that might hurt shareholders, so instead the plan is simply to pump water from the rivers. No one has yet published the plan for when the rivers run dry ...



Anyway, ISTR hearing a while ago that the Keilder Dam poured more fresh water away in a day, than the deficit in SE England for a week - the underlying point being there's lot's of lovely fresh water in the frozen north ... too much of the stuff really. So what would be the *practical* issues involved in building a massive 400 mile, 1m ? 2m pipeline to bring surplus water from the north to the south ?



Would it be possible to cunningly cut a few canals to simply use the network of canals and rivers to bring water to the south ?



Curious to know what people think.


Some water already travels but not that far.

I believe that water from the Ouse is transferred to another river, flows down that river and is then transferred to one of Essex Water's reservoirs in Essex.

It is far more profitable to leave the leaks unmended and truck it down the A1 which is what they did last time Yorkshire Water got itself into serious trouble with dry reservoirs which was in the drought of 1995.

I expect with a bit of cunning you could route it across the UK - or it might be better move some of the people from the SE instead.

The BBC has recently relocated those who drew the short straw to Salford and they had to employ a motivational relocation consultant from America to persuade/bully people to move up North!

The best guide to that is the London Water Ring Main (LWRM), which carries around 1 gigalitre per day, as compared to the 1.3 gigalitre per day that the Keilder Dam uses in its hydro electric plant. The main ring is about 80km long, uses 2.5m pipe, was built between 1988 and 1993 and cost about £250 million. Current estimates of cost for proposed extensions are around £9 million per km.

The Llangollen Canal was built as a water feed to the Shropshire Union and still provides water to a reservoir near Crewe. However, there is a distinct shortage of canals connecting to the main network when you get north of the Leeds - Liverpool canal. Further problems are that the water flow in some sections would need to be rather fast for many inland waterways pleasure boats and that open waterways lose water by evaporation, particularly in summer, when the water would be needed the most.

OK, so we'll nish the easier canal-based solution ...

£9million/Km ... so lets say 600Km from North to South ? = £5,600 million ... call it £6 billion. Now remember it's a government project (so remember the VAT) and quadruple that ... £24 billion to permanently ease the SE water crisis.

Of course we'd have to wait for a recession to do it, otherwise there'd be a shortage of labour ... oh, hang on ..

Personally I would rather see £24 billion spent this way, than the £800 billion we are supposed to have given to the banks.

OK, I agree there. However, since abstracting from a river is clearly a last resort, I imagine the network is effectively leak free. I'm sure OFWAT will have seen to that.

Personally, not living in the SE[1], I rather don't care if they do run out of water. I'd just prefer it if they didn't kill the rivers off on the way.

[1]Where I live has plentiful water supplies, due to some foresighted Victorians who smelt the coffee, and realised that expanding cities needed lots of water. So they built a pipeline to bring it in.

I drove through Libya when the "man-made river project" was uderway. during half a day's driving, I saw around 250 truck carrying large pipe (possibly

4m diameter, but I'm not sure as they were a distance away on their own narrow road). Apparently they drove one way for 3 days of the week and the empty wagons drove the other way for the next three days, then they had a day off.

The way we seem to work here these days would probably mean we'd be lucky to have an equivalent finished by the end of the century!

Likewise in Brum. I get water from a private company that never runs dry and has never been government owned so it didn't run the network down to keep labours spending up.

The more hype the water companies can put out about running short of water, the more they can ask for, and the more margin they can make. Hosepipe bans are one example, they save a miniscule percentage of water, vastly more leaks out of water company mains every day. And I'll bet the announcement was based on the water copmanies' say so.

The Llangollen has a pretty noticeable current - I'd say about 2kts in the narrowest bits - and that doesn't really cause a problem. Not even to me as a novice on the back of 60ft of steel.

However, were it carrying the outflow from the Kielder Dam, the current through the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct would be around 16 knots.

There wasn't much current when I was there in the early 80s - there again there wasn't much water either, their being a drought! Boats were grounding all over the place.

And in a few years it'll all move back down South, if history is anything to go by.

Drama and such progs can be made anywhere - usually not by the BBC directly anyway these days. But anything involving current affairs or the arts in its most general terms has its centre in London. Until they move parliament and all the theatres etc elsewhere. Which means shipping the majority of the people involved in such things up to Manchester and back. Very economical.

Sadly the BBC is run by failed accountants with what little common sense they once had bought out.

Gravity should be OK - it's downhill from the north of England, innit ? At least it's up from the sarf, so it must be down from the narf.

That's only in terms of latitude, by all other measures its downhill all the way north of Watford..

Some of us would far sooner see the south east disappear into a barren desert.

I'd advocate spending the 24 billion on beer, cheese, chocolate, fish and chips and the construction of a wall to keep the southerners away from our water.
