Sharpening tools.... have I been doing it wrong?

For many years I've sharpened most of my stuff (planes, chisels, chainsaws, cutlery, scissors etc). Today a local lady asked if I could sharpen her loop knife. Never seen one before as I have a particular dislike of anything equine. Told her I would give it a shot. A quick google bought me to this forum

The 4th post down really surprised me. It was drummed into me years ago that you should always sharpen into the blade. Perhaps this type of knife is different as any sharpening takes places on the inside of the loop. Had a fiddle with it and produced a reasonable edge by sharpening into the blade of the not very nice chinese stainless steel. (chain saw file, slip stones and some abrasive papers)

Have I been doing it wrong for so long? If so I think I should pack it all up.

No but with a file the teeth catch on the sharp edge and blunten it, slightly different with fine abrasives.
