Probelms with Bluetooth

The N.H.S have issued me with new hearing aids that are Bluetooth enabled. I am therefore able to pair them with my iPad Air, my MacBook Air, the iPhone 11 and the Panasonic smart TV. It's easy and simple to pair them, and up to today with no problem.



But from two days ago they suddenly need to be paired up every day. Easy to do, and yet they won't hold the pairing for longer than 24 hours.



I'm sure I haven't done anything to cause this, and I'm baffled for a cause. They do need to be charged at night and I do wonder is this could be the cause. But it's funny they only suddenly started to behave like this.



Can any of the resident genii on this NG come up with any solution?

Could it be that there is a limit to the number of items that can be paired and you've exceeded that? My car has a limit of 4 paired items but it simply refuses to add a 5th and you have to go through a process of deletion. In ear devices probably won't have a delete function so that an extra pair overwrites a previous pair (the last?).

Now there's a thought. I never did think about a numbers limitation. I'll see if the Hospital Audiology Department can help. They're not too clever when it comes to issues of this sort. Thanks, Peter

All the new Apple operating systems have come out this week so I wonder if your devices have done the update automatically?

I am told that in order to get good results from hearing aids on the IOS devices, you nee the made for I-Phone banner on the aids. Many now offer this and they give a far more stable connection with lower latency than normal Bluetooth does.

However if all the other items you mention have the same issue, it has to be the number of connections somewhere.

Hearing aid hardware, is some of the most "opaque" hardware in existence.

With N.H.S , you have the advantage that the model name and number may be "well known" to consumers. If you have a name for the thing, or if there was a name on the box, that may help.

We have no idea what chip or chips are inside one of those. Hearing aids are so small, that the chip would be a CSP with a glob top, and no identifying number. Even taking the device apart and using a microscope, won't help the experimenter. You need a solvent to remove the glob top. The device is wire bonded underneath. And eyeballing the silicon die, is only going to work, if the designer put a "vanity logo" in the silicon, which is normally not allowed when you design stuff. A polygon pusher can draw stuff on the surface of a chip, but they would likely lose their job if caught screwing around. A polygon pusher is one of the last people to work on a design, before fabrication. (I used to sit in a room with those guys. We all used the same IBM CAD terminals.)

The Bluetooth declaration is likely programmable, so they can be opaque and put any text string they like for the device.

In short, there's almost no way to determine what guts are in it!

But if the device is well known, someone may have figured it out by accident, and then you can only tap into the info, if you know the make and model number. And it could be white label and lacking such ID (purchased in bulk, under contract).

I like your theory, that the device shuts down during recharging, and then it does a reboot. Graham explains how the table it uses, has limited slots. It could be, as part of the reboot, if the device finds the table is full, it "kicks one pairing out" to make room for a single pairing on that run. That seems a reasonable wild guess as to what it is doing. It should kick out pairings LRU, because that's what clever people do (it should not be kicking out the pairing you are using).

Well I saw the Audiology Technician on Thursday at the Hospital, and the result was she didn't have the foggiest idea of Bluetooth or the reason for the hearing aidis dropping their pairing. So much for so called e experts. I'll get on to the manufacturers. Peter
