Anyone got any tips for how to maximise the life of partly used cartridges of silicone sealant ?
Always finding, use 1/4-1/2 a cartridge do a job, then when I come back say in a years time it has started setting in the cartridge and have to buy some more!!!
Cool place. For short term, a (closely fitting, smooth shanked) screw in the top of the sealant will work. If you can squeeze out a bit every month, this'll be fine. However, for longer term, I've found that aluminium foil tape applied over the nozzle seems to work well. Make sure you get it smoothed and stuck to the nozzle.
I unscrew the applicator cone, put a 1" square piece of aluminium foil over the nozzle, and screw the cone back on over it. This normally seems to work for me. Different types seem to have different shelf lifes though.
A way I keep it is, when I have finished I remove the nozzle, put some polythene type materiail over the screw thread and screw the nozzle back on and leave it in the garage. The bit in the nozzle goes off but this is easily cleared with a straightened out coathanger. I have used tubes well over 6 months old doing this.
