Pissed off with Printers

No question. All I was saying is that at least some inkjets are much better than they used to be. I'd sworn never to buy another until I needed to replace an A3 laserjet and decided to take a punt on the Brother on the basis of the reviews. I took the view that even if the printing turned out to be rubbish, I would still have a useful auto-feed scanner.

My CP1515n does a good job of photos as well. What it does do is a regular "calibration" which consumes toner. I don't print much colour so a I'd be lucky to get maybe 50 colour print outs (not photos) from a set of cartridges. That's with the "change your cartridges now to maintain print quality" option swiched off.

This made me get a ethernet to USB print server and bring the LJ1200 monochome laser back into service. The LJ1200 had sat in a cupboard for years, plugged it in, switched on, printed with out a hitch.

A cheap, monochrome, laser printer. The toner cartridge will last you for many years at that rate and it will just work when you need it.

Even the one I put in a shed for about 5 years still worked, although it was a little too streaky as damp had got to it. A cartridge swap immediately cured that and my son still uses it in his room to avoid having to come down to the networked, colour laser printer.

Samsung is HP now.

My Samsung CLP-680ND kept telling me to replace the cartridges, so I turned the warning off - it took about 14 months and many hundreds of pages before the cartridges actually required changing!

To be fair, it is more of an office workgroup printer and probably warns very early to avoid an office full of people being unable to print!

I had a Samsung phone that didn't last long. Is there something I don't know about?

My mono laser is parallel port - fed from a network. The A3 colour laser is also on the network, but has in internal network connection.

Or copy the file to a USB stick and pay a visit to your local library, where they will print occasional needs for colour prints.

And maybe a cheap B&W laser for home use.

I'm using an HP LaserJet 4M+ manufactured and in use since 1993. I have several spares...

I also have a cheap colour laser printer for when I need colour. Got fed up with dried out colour ink cartridges.

They last for years if you leave them switched on, but they do periodic cleans which keeps the heads clear but does waste ink.

I bought a richo sp240dn for £45 which has lasted for 18 months on the starter cartridges, about 600 pages, I now have a new compatible black cartridge to put in and it cost £25. The OEM carts are £200 a set.

The only problem with the printer is that it doesn't work with linux, but that's not really a surprise.

Buy a laser printer, not an inkjet.

I had similar problems with an Epson inkjet printer. Threw it away and bought a cannon, no problems at all even though it gets very little use since I bought a Brother which also does not give problems. I also have a Samsung laser for black and white which is why the inkjets see little use.

get a laser. Brian

Yes mine is hp but when the toner runs out get a refilled or clone one as hp have a very expensive service for these and its stupid as its obviously just trying to get you to change the printer. I will say this though, hp inkjets hardly ever clog up like epsons do as most have the print head on the cart itself so its thrown away with the empty cart. Brian

My cheap Canon MG5550 printer occasionally pops up an error saying that there is a problem and it needs to be taken to a dealer. Holding down the ON button and the button with a red triangle for 10 seconds fixes the problem instantly.

I'm still using my Dell AIO that I bought in 2006, which works fine. (I've had to install the Vista print driver to work it on my W7 laptop.)

Print heads come with the cartridges and it never wastes ink on cleaning the heads (nor does it need to and I don't use it all that often).

After some poor experiences with refilled (or "remanufactured") cartridges I now buy genuine Dell cartridges from

at about half the price from Dell. (I just checked and Dell don't even list my printer now.)

And you could use it to make reasonably convincing photocopies of the old paper bank notes (not that I ever did of course).

My Dell C1760NW colour laser printer has been fine with low usage. Cost about £100. Works with wifi or wired ethernet connection.

Yep. Add another vote for a Laser printer. I've had many Inkkets and they don't last.
