PIR LED lamp - blown ?

Question

Have a few "Auraglow" motion activated night LED lamps for hallways etc.

Finally changed the batteries in one that lives outside over the bin. It was working fine in the day when I cupped it in my hand (to darken it and trip the sensor).

Come nighttime, pop out the door and it *flashes* and is now dead.

I know these things don't have much love here (they're pretty neat for power cuts though) and wondered if this sounds like a standard failure mode ?

Will a newer one be any more reliable ?

(FWIW When I first bought a set of 4 from Amazon 5 years ago, 2 failed in

2 weeks ...)

Somebody reckoned but I'm sceptical, that his were seen off over a night with severe thunderstorms. Surely if they were battery devices, there is no long wire to get the Electromagnetic pulse from. Brian

A few weeks ago I had a look at three solar powered PIR controlled lights that had failed over the previous 6 months or so. In all cases it was the (separate) solar panel that had failed. No obvious sign of water ingress and no obvious sign of corrosion but zero volts output in full sunshine.

The light unit with battery pack and electronics did however show signs on corrosion around the battery terminals but the batteries were showing a low voltage and the terminals were be cleaned and greased.

I purchased some cheap 6V solar panels from Ebay, soldered on the cut off power lead from the old solar panel, hot melt glue and a spray with car paint clear coat has provided strain relief and waterproofing and the lights are working again.
