I don't think any boiler installed in 1968 is actually capable of modulation...
It would be a binary simple burner that is fully on or fully off......
And are you sure a 1968 boiler actually had LEDs?
Laser LEDs were only invented by Nick Holonyak in 1962 and even then LEDs remained expensive until Fairchild semiconductor reduced the cost from £200 down to about 5p.
Nick Holonyak has recently passed away on the 18th September 2022.
With a top temperature of 40C those brewing ones are not going to be too good at measuring flow temperatures of 50 to 80C :)

I think that in another post he said the 1968 boiler was replace some time after 2000.
Poor phrasing on my behalf. The boiler size was determined by the initial build in 1968. Subsequent "heating engineers" have simply replaced with the same capacity despite double glazing, PVC doors, etc, so my 2006ish Baxi 105HE hardly gets out of idle to keep the bungalow warm*, at least so far.
I use a pair of thermometers like this. The spiked probe tip can be squeezed into the pipe-supporting clip.

The design is not much good on individual radiators though. Any suggestions for that?
That's a cheap price at £2.80 including delivery from the UK.
If you felt geeky, you could leave a pair attached to the radiator!
In our previous house, I installed a modulating boiler. Pre-1968, because thatbwas when our daughter was born.
a coupl e of inches of pipe insulation should sort that
but one can vary the feed pressure/flow. Whether one should is a matter for debate.
