been trying all the youtube downloaders and they all even the "free" ones want paid to work properly and without watermarks....as I refuse to pay a cent for anything computer related is there a nice simple free one with not snags ?
Now, I know you frighten easily. Github sites do not give out executable code all that easily. However, if you're an English reader, you will soon notice the "Windows User" link in the Readme text when you scroll down the page.
For Windows to find your "youtube-dl", the %path% is used in the Command Prompt window to find it. If the installer is good, it will add an item to the path for this to work. Otherwise, you may need to give an absolute path in the command prompt command. When the path to an executable has a space in the name, and you need to give an absolute path to it, it helps to put double quotes around the string like this.
You can stop here, if you can get that much working...

That tool also benefits from having FFMPEG present. FFMPEG is used as a "multiplexer", to make an output movie from a downloaded soundtrack plus a downloaded silent video. Youtube-DL asks FFMPEG to glue the two downloads together to make the "best movie" it can. This potentially gives you higher-res vids, which is the only reason to be interested.
"Do I need any other programs?
youtube-dl works fine on its own on most sites. However, if you want to convert video/audio, you'll need avconv or ffmpeg. On some sites - most notably YouTube - videos can be retrieved in a higher quality format without sound. youtube-dl will detect whether avconv/ffmpeg is present and automatically pick the best option. "
Let's see what else we can find. A purse needs matching luggage.

93 MB = statically compiled, best for home user, no DLLs loose to muck things up... Version 4 FFMPEG is no longer for Windows XP and seems to be 64-bit only. This package is way too big and seems to have some Java/Bluray materials in it. Zeranoe is shut down, so I can't get a "more straight forward version" from there any more.

Anyway, that's some example of materials the kids would use for their YT downloads. You can do as much or as little of that as you want.
The original attitude if taken to the obvious conclusion would mean no programmer would ever make any money from their hours of work. Its already hitting local newspapers where people just grab and don't pay, so really draconian pay walls come along or as has happened the site is nearly 3/4 annoying adverts and if you block them they won't let you in. News of the local kind is now very hard to come by and I feel that is dangerous from the account of local democracy and the health of the nation generally. Brian
Possibly see if your local council produces an email or web informational newsletter.
I signed up to my local councils newsletter to find recently that they decided that it was a good idea to buy a (failing) shopping mall for £10 million in order to revitalise the town centre! Asking price before lockdown £24 million.
Also, sigh, they plan to do some more major road improvements (road works) on the main road into the town to fix all the problems they have created with the previous road improvement schemes. They don't seem to realise that performing traffic surveys whilst drivers are avoiding previous major roadworks on route don't give them a true picture of normal road behaviour at the junctions they plan to improve. Years back they included a bus lane in one junction plan, neglecting to consider that it was never a bus route and unlikely to be ever one in the future.
You will need this file too, because the GUI program can't manage to fetch this by itself anymore. The GUI program is broken, but we can fix it... with this file.

To put the downloaded 8MB file in the right place, you need to adjust File Explorer so "AppData" will be visible.
File Explorer, under the "View" tab, and over on the right, should be an Options button.

One of the options is to unhide hidden stuff. Click Apply, then Apply to All so you can see AppData folder.
