OT: Mystery roadside cameras

Years ago, friends of mine lived in a tower-block in Salford, with a manned security office at the bottom. Right opposite was another tower block, monitored, by cameras, from the first block. One night, all the cameras were stolen.

Yep. And have been used for that here. We have one longer street on the edge of town which is used by a lot of traffic to get from one side of town to the other which was used as a bit of a racetrack by plenty. It only has houses on one side of the road, the other side is the significant hill that is on one side of the town. Once the traffic average speed was measured, they put 4 significant speed bumps on that road to slow the traffic down.

Yes they can and do, and that's from a mate of mine, one of the council engineers who uses them.

Not sure what you mean by anonymously, presumably just that the individual vehicle is not identified.

They are much older technology than speed cameras that issue speeding fines and are used by different local government and police operations.

Not really. The self checkout scales are both for checking that you don't put stuff on the ouput side without scanning it and for calculating the price with loose stuff like potatoes that you put into a bag yourself from the bin in the veg section of the store.

In fact one of our duopoly supermarket chains did it the first way initially and then stopped doing that because it caused too many faulse alarms which required the thief checker money to intervene.

Yup, they are a measured distance apart so the time between pulses gives a decent approximation of speed. Traditionally the cheap way to monitor local speeds following a speeding complaint prior to getting the plods out with speed guns. IIRC there is a requirement for X(10<?>%) of vehicles to be travelling at Y(15<?>)% over the speed limit to trigger a police monitoring event.

The short tube gives the number in one direction = A. The long tube gives the number in both directions = B Subtract A from B to get the number in the opposite direction from A.

Makes more sense to use two full tubes so you get the speed as well
