And what of all the people who don't or can't drive?

Was she allowed to drive after the tests?

Not my problem. I'd be doubtful about letting them operate machinery.
That's a hell of a lot of valuable drugs.

How do you fit that in with alcohol being legal?

I don't make the rules. Somebody else decided that a small quantity of alcohol was not dangerous. Apart from controlled medical intervention, I see no benefit to society from liberalising mind altering substances.

Then you never took enough....
The point about mind altering substances is that they show you how the mind can be - er - altered - by substances. And also what stimuli it is exposed to.
The benefit to society is the people will stop believing all the unbelievable bullshit they are exposed to, and understand that largely from puberty to old age, they are out of their f****ng skulls on sex hormones.
That's why they are banned. The powers that be don't want people to arrive at that position. They would rather have them helpless slaves to their own biochemistry
Exactly the same as small quantities of many other mind altering drugs.
I was once told by a well respected medic who specialised in addiction that if earth was taken over my Martians, and they decided to legalise a recreational drug, alcohol would be a long way down the list.

You can ban it for all I care.

Numb the excesses of capitalism?
Generate tax?
Help ensure a regulated supply - chemically safe, lessen associated crime etc.?
Recast social stigma and promote support for dysfunctional addicts for example?

You propose relying on human self control to limit the intake?

Works with coffee.
But I understand that from your point of view, there are people, who can't look after themselves and need to be governed and controlled for their own good, and superior enlightened beings, who can, identified by their ability to con the electorate into voting for them, or, in the EU, by being appointed by their chums to tell you what to do.
Probably goes with being a farmer, with livestock....
Everybody is on drugs all of the time.
Some are generated by your body, many more are legal and ingestible and some are illegal.
The distinction is purely arbitrary.
Aspirin. Would struggle to pass safety tests these days.
excessive purchase has been made difficult for years.
You're advised not to. What do you mean by "allowed"? Mainly important if you are middle aged or old, due to the loss of depth of focus which older people rely on to see different distances. Otherwise things are rather bright (in the daytime).
ROFL. If only.
If all substances and activities had to be approved by doctors before they were allowed, sex would never have been allowed.
That would be as pointless as the present 'ban' on other drugs. It would simply move the supply into the hands of criminals too. Think Prohibition.
Reading slightly between the lines, I see an ambition to join the Dutch and now the Maltese. I have never been offered pot. Have smoked a total of 5 Woodbine cigarettes and drink bitter shandy if anyone drags me into a pub. Are you all trying to say there is something missing in my life?
I had a little excitement when intensive care got the mix wrong on an epidural. Either I got neat Novocaine or neat whatever the mix component was. Not much fun in hearing your blood circulating!
The other memorable event at age 15 was being challenged to drink two pints of scrumpy cider at a friends father's pub. My mistake was not watching him fill the glass!
I'm not sure how any of this links to Brexit but I do think the jury is still out on that one:-(
