You shouldn't confuse that nice Mr Brock of the Beatrix Potter stories (or was it Rupert Bear?) with the actual animal, which is a nasty piece of work. Because of all the badgers, we have no hedgehogs round here. Since there are no large predators (wolves, bears, etc) left in the UK, Man has to act that part in order for there to be some balance.

Some of us care about animal welfare and see no pleasure in bloodsports.

Asking the question is further proof you don't care about animal welfare. This is all about your fanatical jealousy to those whose partners allow us to eat meat.

We've had a couple of local reports of people taking wild deer, no bad thing really with the motor car being the only other predator.

The Archers was never primarily about farming. Nothing like enough farmers to make that viable.

It was always about a farming family. With reasonably well researched bits about farming thrown in.

But at the moment it's made with the actors at home, so not surprisingly concentrates on subjects easy to cover in that way. IMHO, it should have stopped until it could come back as normal.

The problem there is suitable weapons. 0.240 minimum? We back on to 130 acres of filled domestic tip. 30 acres have been largely planted up with trees but Tarmac have some hope of further class A waste tipping so won't plant up the rest. The Fallow yard up in the trees and break my fences to get to the grass.

Most roadside access points are blocked with concrete which makes field work a pain with extra trips to open and re-block the gate.

Also Fox/Red Kite/Buzzard protection and people blame farming for the lack of Grey Partridge, Plovers, Voles etc. You cannot protect top predators without some impact on prey species.

Rather loose connection through Lurcher dog ownership.

Perhaps I don't 'travel' in such circles, but know friends who own lurchers, and some retired greyhounds, where none live in caravans.

I'm not sure why we should excuse immoral behaviour on some characteristic, protected or otherwise.

Both hedgehogs and badgers have happily co-existed in the British Isles for tens of millions of years.

Then you show up on the scene, and all the hedgehogs apparently "disappear".

So let's start killing some badgers, to restore "the balance"

Its aims originally included education of /farmers/ with a view to more food. BBC only gave up on that officially very recently* and IIRC dropped their agricultural adviser. Hence I think no more stuff about plate meters etc. (I may be wrong: I gave listening up when they went uber-soapy and killed Nigel with a fall that revealed Lower Loxley to be as high as York Minster.)

We have been plagued by foxes for 20+ years; I shudder to think what they are going to be like now the 20 mph speed limit has reduced enormously the only significant threat to them.

There certainly was more than one case of certain traveller camps having dead and dying dogs after dog fights, that proved to be stolen via their chips....

They say hare coursing goes on around here, but I've never seen it or heard of anyone being arrested for it. The place is awash with hares, too.

Seen a lot in the back garden. Bigger than bunnies with black tips on the ears. Run like s*it too. Very hard for a dog less than a greyhound or lurcher to get anywhere near them.

Can't see a problem with dogs chasing hares. May the best animal win, and my money's on the hare.
