OT - FriendsReunited - the sunset of an era

I'm sure many posters here would have use FriendsReunited in the past and dropped it as other sites became more popular. It's being closed in the next couple of weeks. As the owner says "the sunset of an era".

It's rare that folks on the usenet community would necessarily engage in such nonsense. You have walked into the wrong pub.

Its being closed because the owners, itv, never really did get it or indeed invest in trying to make itkeppup with the changes in demand. A classic case of a company buying into a market they never understood. I'm surprised they lasted this long. What about myspace, next for the great back up in the sky? Brian

Myspace has a niche for promoting bands, it's declining more slowly. I expect that bandcamp and soundcloud might edge out myspace eventually.

ITV offloaded it a few years back at a huge loss to DC Thompson. They got the original owners back to have a look at it.

They wanted to charge you for making contact to some one else. £5 IIRC

I am not a fan of Facebook or twitter, but they are funded by advertising and don't charge.

Does anyone use myspace I don't think so, I know some bands and they don't use myspace, they either use youtube, soundcloud or create their own website.

I used from early on. I thought it was interesting to see what people where up to and potentially contact old friends.

ISTR they started charging for it though, I wasn't arsed enough to pay for it.

I never used it, but apparently the first big mistake they made as compared with Facebook, was that they charged a subscription from the start. which was a barrier to new users.

Although saying that, It may have been more of case of Facebook having learned from their mistake.

The second big mistake is evident in the name. Once these Friends have been re-united there's no real incentive for them to go on using the site - rather than keeping in touch by email, phone, or face to face.
