OT: Electric cars; how green are they?

Been past them innumerable times. There's a level-crossing somewhere between Dullingham and Six-Mile Bottom that you have to open and close yourself.

Tim Streater :

Ah, Six-Mile Bottom. I remember cycling through it in the 60s. The "Six- Mile Bottom" sign had been spray-painted with additional information: "Twinned With The Moon".

I thought about this for a while, looked back at the sign for no good reason, and saw the explanation spray-painted on the back of the sign: "No Atmosphere".

At the SMB end of the Hight Street, a bit beyond and opposite the Post Office there's a Club, forget its name. Go past there late enough and someone may well drop their trousers.

How long to get there? Depends where you live!

Mine does 65mpg. It is the MK 3 and 9 months old. I will get the Vaux Ampera when out, unless Toyota come out with a similar design.

They do not. Diesels are filthy, noisy, crap to drive, heavy, expensive fuel and pollute like hell. Shitty things.

Yes.

The Chevy Volt runs 100% on electric motors - the engine is only a genny. YOPu can plug it in and travel 40-60 miles on battery. Very cheap to run then. Or just run on the internal genny. Most cars will be like this config in 5 years time. The car does 60 mpg running on the genny alone. There is no power sapping, heavy and complex auto transmission. You can ignore replacing batteries. Ferdinand Porche was using the same setup to win races over 100 years ago - it is not new. The Chevy Volt setup, without a large battery set, just running off the genny, has been feasible for at least 25 years. When EMUs came about. Just size it all up. The makers never did, as they do not want progress unless forced to. Especially US companies.

Jaguar are taking about the next generation which appears to be a series-hybrid setup, like the Chevy Volt. Electric motors only move the car. The engine again is just a genny.

Lotus have small, light, simple engines specifically for this application - ready off the shelf already proven and R&D's design. It is available to any car maker to make under licence or Lotus will have a company make them for you.

Jaguar have tested the 1200cc Lotus range extender engines (gennys) and are getting 57mpg (imp) and 1,200 miles range. Impressive for such a largish car. I don't like the two-speed mechanical transmission they have used in the prototype. That can be eliminated using the correct electric motor. But it is only a test car. It looks like they are adapting an existing car rather than building around the technology.

Wankel has not been major success, but a success it is, however in certain applications it shines with good power/weight ratio. R&D has seen that in fixed speed genny application in hybrids it could be a big improvement - as does the Chevy Volt hybrid operates. The Wankel is very small, light, quiet and smooth. Perfect for a car genny.

The Chevy Volt is on sale in a few weeks and will be the Vaux Ampera in the UK in 18 months or so.

This also means smaller and cheaper overhead lines. Great on metro networks, which is all stop start. The efficiency rises like hell. Then add trackside supercapacitors.

The Prius consumes twice as little and doesn't pollute like hell. It is also great to drive.

The Prius is NOT small.
