Anyone who even has dirty thoughts that ID cards are a good idea - think again
The only single possible benefit I can see, is that like with most government projects that will require massive IT development and procurement, it will be unuseable at the end of its (vastly late and overspent) delivery. In the time it takes to get there however, it will require billions of pounds pouring into software development before the whole thing goes pear shaped. Handy if you are in IT and software development ;-)
