Obtaining daily smartmeter readings (EON)

I get electricity from E.ON and a few months ago I had one of their smartmeters installed. I don't have a meter for gas.

Is it possible to download ALL my meter reading data from the EON site? Perhaps as a CSV file.

The site shows my monthly readings but I understand the smartmeter sends readings daily. I would be happy to get just weekly readings but monthly is too infrequent for my purpose at the moment.

I have the option with my supplier (Octopus) for 30 minute readings and they can be downloaded as csv file

As a test I've just downloaded 10,000+ readings starting from when my smart meter was commissioned.

There does not seem to be a web site where you can view this for EON. When I had Octopus they had this data on the web site.

Its very annoying as there are some android apps that let me view but not download this data...

I've had some success with the Bright app/web site. I forget the details off-hand, and it took some unscrambling, but I did manage to download all except recent data.

Not answering your question, but I'm with OVO (not particularly out of choice, but got dumped there when OVO took over SSE's domestic customer base and ATM ICBA to change). I have a smart meter and an IHD6 in-house display. On the meter, the SW, WAN and HAN lights flash regularly. Gas is not monitored by this meter. AIUI the HAN connection is between the meter and the in-house display (Bluetooth or similar?).

Is it possible to intercept those HAN signals and display them directly on a computer or smart phone, either directly via a dongle or an App or similar or via my BT hub?

when I was with e.on the default was monthly readings, their website allowed you to opt for daily (or 1/2 hourly I forget exactly) readings.

In other words, the meter doesn't take daily or half-hourly readings unless you opt in to do that. It isn't taking them and then not showing them to you, which means you can't look at them retrospectively.

AIUI all SMETS2 meters /store/ half-hourly readings* but suppliers can only /use/ them from domestic customers if they opt in.

*3 months for gas; 12 months for electricity

EDF asked me what interval I wanted to set mine too, half hourly was the default. I'm not sure how you might know but the app certainly allows the readings to be seen, but then you can see these or hear them in my case on the user display anyway, if you are suspicious. I have no gas. Brian

The options I have with Octopus is 30 minutes, daily or monthly but with the warning "If you choose daily or monthly reporting, you will not be able to access your half-hourly data through us." I'm not sure if this means I cannot go back to 30 minutes after selecting another period.

Octopus also show usage bar charts for daily, weekly, monthly or yearly consumption for both electricity and gas BUT only for the current period in question - daily will only be for today*, I cannot go back 3 days for example. Weekly will only be for today and the previous 6 days and only show 7 values, monthly will be for today an the previous 29/30 days and show 30/31 values.

As I indicated in another post, I can download 10,000+ off 30 minute meter readings since my meters were commissioned.

  • starts and ends at midnight and at times the information is so delayed that it may not be useful. For instance as I write this at 10:30am only the readings for 0:30 and 1:00 are shown.

There is a free app for phones which displays usage. Called Loop. Not investigated it, though. Wondering why it is free.

I'm waiting until SMS gives me a working properly IHD. My meters for both were only installed a few weeks ago, and the supplied IHD only reads gas, and the price shown obviously from an old tarrif.

Possibly 'cos it doesn't work until you buy a "loop clip" - something they try very hard to leave you discover only after you have installed the app. I never did find the price as I refuse to deal with anyone so devious.

Oh, I forgot to add: it seems to be just a clamp meter so it doesn't talk to the meter. And I don't know how if it deals properly with power factors < 1.

There's another app called 'Bright' from Hildegard/Glowmarkt, that talks to the DCC to get your smart meter usage. They sell a device to allow realtime data, but you can just run the app without buying their device if half-hourly readings are enough. It gets half-hourly readings a few mins after the half-hour, IMX.

Once you've set that up there's an API to get the data out of Hildegard - for example there's a Home Assistant plugin.

I was under the impression that when I set half-hourly readings, they were only actually sent once per day? Maybe that's older meters, mine's been dumb for many years.

Me too. Though I think DCC are working on a change to allow readings to be sent every half hour as part of the move to half-hourly settlement.

I have just tried it, refreshing until the reading came through. The reading for '15:00', being the period 15:00-15:30, came through at 15:38.

This is a SMETS2 meter on Octopus. I'm surprised it does that - I thought they would batch readings to reduce WAN traffic.

Theo

ta for a tasty bit of empirical evidence

I did read somewhere that DCC expect a 500% increase in network traffic over the next few years

Loop now seems to talk to the smart meter.

Dave

Thanks. Re-visiting the site I see they have now stopped selling the clip and say they can "read from your Smart Meter". But I note they also they refer to their "partner" N3rgy Data Ltd. So I suspect they are actually - like other apps - accessing the data the meter has sent to DCC. I've seen other apps openly explain that's what they do.
