Obtaining daily smartmeter readings (EON)

Ahh ...

E.on Next is isn't *exactly* E.on, it's the old nPower Direct that E.on purchased from RWE.

From:-

“The next step is moving all E.ON energy customers – millions of homes and hundreds of thousands of small businesses around the country – to E.ON Next. This step is vital in building more effective and responsive relationships with our customers, because it is in their homes and businesses that changes are needed in order to combat the climate crisis; that means creating warmer, healthier, more comfortable homes and more efficient and cost-effective businesses.”

so it is intended that E.on will become E.on next. All new customers go there (I am a new customer)...

yes it's intended, they've been saying that for about 6 months, but the eon next and eon energy customers are on different platforms, hence why they may have different options re: smartmeter billing e.g. I think nPower actually developed and provide the Octopus backend which is much newer then the eon/powergen backend ...

They did those first, but AFAIK not yet the eon.energy customers?

Ah - thanks. I was right in thinking there was a catch somewhere.

I think the smart meter only sends out readings once in a while. If I fire up my IHD, it takes some time before it shows a reading. Half hour could well be the case.

Since the gas meter is battery powered, it would need a pretty massive battery if it were 'on' all the time?

The electricity watt readings should update regularly - every 5 or 10 seconds. I don't think it should take a long time for the IHD to register. The 'cost for today' numbers may update less frequently.

I've never had a smart gas meter, but I don't think you typically get second-by-second readings from those anyway. So I could imagine they will connect less often.

As I mentioned before, the meter (or more strictly the comms hub that usually sits on top of the leccy meter) sends data to the IHD more often than to the WAN. When you get electricity showing on your IHD you'll see what it shows as current use for that responds within ~10 seconds changes. Gas is different because, as you point out, the gas meter needs to nurse its battery so it only reports every 30 minutes.

Could be. I'll report if they ever get my IHD to show the electric meter. Three phone calls to SMS with the same reply - it takes time to programme it. Yet my nearby mate's one, done a couple of weeks before, worked straight out of the box.

I assumed the electric meter - having power all the time - did the heavy lifting. And the gas meter simply a low power link to that.

I managed to get the second installer who called to mount the comms hob alongside the meter. As no space for the full thing between the CU and alarm panel - where the old meter was. First installer said the CU would have to be moved.

The smart meter - with connector to the comms unit fitted - is (near) exactly the same size as the old meter, height wise.

Loop clip no longer needed. Works just fine getting data from DCC. Also Bright works well.

I expect that they will try and sell additional services..

The system allows for options of monthly, weekly, or every 30 minute reading, with the batches of data uploaded once per day overnight, but you have to select the option you want.
