new driving licence

just got my application for my new licence to replace my paper one issued when the wee red book went.....I remember looking at it and thinking October 2022 ?...I'll be dead by then........and we will all have jet packs and flying cars......what do we have?... expensive petrol and two world leaders threatening to use nukes....what a life

It's all downhill now you've got a plastic licence: you'll have to fork out money to renew it every 10 years and send in a new photo (either to the DVLA or for your passport: the two agencies can use each other's photos).

I suppose it all hinges on you having not changed address: any change of address triggers an automatic update to the latest format.

Just received my over 70 Licence after waiting several months, it was my fault, because I didn't notice I had to apply on line and then send a printout of completed on line application by post to Swansea.

Anybody who started with a red book for a licence, or the beige one that preceded that, will probably be on three year renewals by now.

When I queried this anomaly the jobsworth said it was a random event for validation, not everyone is validated.

every 3 years, after 70 surely ?.

The advantage of a plastic biometric driving licence is that you can do other government renewals online with a far quicker turnaround.

You will lose your right to drive a 7.5 tonner after 70 though unless you renew by post with medical documentation. This is a problem for some camper vans that are intentionally plated at just over 3.5 tonnes for various reasons. Neighbour who has done this with his said it meant ?cheaper insurance, or something like that

Funnily enough, my renewed photocard license arrived today. It was submitted 1:30pm Tuesday.

It's hard to fault that level of service.

It can go either way - my middle son is 17 in September, so we applied for his provisional licence last week and it arrived this week (not valid for cars until his birthday). My eldest son has a medical condition, so evidence was needed - his first application was cancelled (by the DVLA) and the second took 9 months to be processed ... meaning that it was delayed so much that I could not give him lessons before he went away to university, so we are fitting in a few here and there and will have to pay for more organised lessons than we otherwise would have.
