I don't think it's a new controller, because drivers *are* available online for XP and Vista. I'd expect the design to be at least ten years old, based on the laptop models it's claimed fit.

No! Upgrading to Win10 will almost certainly cause many other aspects of the laptop to stop working. For example there are numerous reports online that the fingerprint sensor stops working, with no drivers available for Win10.

In which case, unless you particularly need the extra USB connections, it would probably be easier to ignore them (and run a USB hub from an internal one if you do need extra ports!)

Probably not much point if it was a proprietary dock - it ought to work on the older OS anyway.

If it's a Dell, isn't that connector just a type of PCI or PCIe connector depending on the vintage? Usually the NIC/USB/serial/PS2 ports are just detected as normal ...

Yes, I only really need one USB (for the occasional thumb drive) which is easier on the body of the laptop anyway.

I thought it a bit odd too, although as far as the dock is concerned I'm pretty sure that Win7 is a *newer* OS than it was originally designed to work with. Albeit they later shipped some laptops with Win7 that would have been suitable for docking.

It's a Toshiba. I suspect the video and ethernet connectors are straight-through, and only the USBs have a fresh controller inside the docking station.
