laminate flooring

is it possable to lay laminate flooring on top of carpet underlay

I'd say it is possible (i.e. you can if you want to) but not recommended (unless you don't mind ripping it up in a few months). What sort of floor do you have? If concrete then you'll need a damp-proof membrane and then the laminate underlay. If you've got level wooden floors, you might get away with the thin underlay stuff, but if they're uneven use the thick green boardy stuff. IIRC, it cost me about £20 for a pack to do 10sqm, which isn't that expensive considering the cost of the laminate.
