The real reason for people living longer is much better medical services and antibiotics and being able to do something about diabetics and the big reduction in the number of smokers.
So it actually true that they have renamed Spotted Dick as Spotted Richard in the Westminster canteen. I wasn't really sure whether to believe it when I read it. Incidentally there is no known connection between the Dick in the pudding and the short form of Richard.

One possibility is that foreign 'beef' is so much cheaper than British beef and the poor Brits can't afford the home-grown stuff.
