Interlinked fire alarms

In Scotland there is a new law which states that you have to have an interlinked fire alarm system probably with various alarms of different types:

Is this overkill a bit like Nicola Sturgeon's Covid rules? Might we get the same rules in the UK.

If I were you, I wouldnt read what Welsh new builds have to put in for fire protection then. It's a good thing that interlinked alarms are put in. The Scottish Government are taking a good lead in doing it. It isnt too expensive, battery interlinked alarms are available, and you can self fit them. In England, all rental houses now have to have some fire detection, all new build houses have to have interlinked smoke/heat (and possibly CO) detectors, so the only ones not mandated are privately owned that are not having large building works done, and the Owner does not want to fit them.

I wouldn't use the term "overkill" but AIUI no full cost-benefit appraisal was published for the regulations in Scotland. It seems to have been a "no price is too high" response after Grenfell.

Very possibly i.d.c. - but I think not soon given they're not part of the tougher requirements for smoke and CO2 alarms in rented accommodation in England currently out for consultation.

There are people in Scotland who cannot DIY alarms - e.g. disabled and pensioners - who simply cannot reach their ceilings. How much do you think they have to pay to get them fitted? I ask as the Scottish govt has provided £m2 to help those on benefits etc which seems to me small beer.
