I am not a robot

Aug 13, 2023 Last reply: 2 years ago 28 Replies

I am getting an awful lot of instances where Google and Startpage don't want to answer my questions until I demonstrate that I am not a robot. Duckduckgo seems unaffected by this. (So just use Duckduckgo then. Case closed. Ed.)

This only happens when I use an elderly Motorola Moto E on wi-fi as if it were a mini tablet and my broadband connection these days is via the 4G mobile network. It doesn't happen when I use any laptop on the same connection.

Google just says it detects unusual activity which leads it to believe that I am a robot; Startpage goes a little further and says it's an unusually intense level of activity on the network. Are they looking at my local network or the whole mobile data network of which I am just a tiny part. There's no evidence of high levels of activity on my personal connection: this happens when all other devices bar the Moto E are turned off and data usage records suggests that no other users are piggybacking on my (secured) mobile data connection.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Can you install a newer browser? I recently dug out an old laptop running Android 4.4 and Firefox 31 (plus the internal Browser) that hadn't been powered on since 2014, and that happened. I think the problem was the browser was so old it didn't run the website's scripts properly.

(I was also getting TLS errors from sites as the browser didn't have their root certificate, and kept having to add security exceptions)

You have demonstrated that you're very accurate with the Captchas, so your input is valuable for training the actual robots which will soon be taking over.

Imagine for a moment, there are a thousand employees in a company that has one public-facing IP address. A "machine" would conclude that "intense activity" is coming from that IP address.

Well, various kinds of ISPs have various kinds of network protocols set up, some of which "save on IP addresses". It's possible one of these designs is used in your Moto E case. It's not really "your" activity that is intense, it's the artificial summation of all customer activity that looks intense. And then, all the customers including yourself, are being forced to fill out the Captchas.

Would this be CGNAT ?

I'm not seeing Captchas here, but the last few days, Google has only been returning one page or two pages of results. And I associate this behavior with "load shedding". Too many searches on not enough racks of equipment at Google.

I am glad about this. Its about time those silly pictures stopped appearing as they were discriminating against blind users, and of course you could not tell them that as you could not get past them. There are other ones out there which are designed to be random, so merely using a script to get in and spam the email does not work every time. Some have a range of questions in the language of the site. Such as, what is a valid colour for a cloudless sky. Brown, Blue, Red etc. Of course now AI is out there, they might need to rethink that one. One I saw used some so called well known celebrities and a question The only problem was, I'd never heard of any of them. Being an old geezer now. Brian

Maybe , but why should either case matter to a so called private search engine like Start page. I know every so often if I use Google they prompt me to sign in to their pages. I'm assuming this is so they know who is doing what, so be careful when searching for those sex toys on Google this Christmas!

Brian

AI already knows to ask humans to solve CAPTCHAs. Took it a few seconds.

Google's not bothered about you buying sex toys, just don't look for 'Let's go Brandon'.

It's just past Lakenheath, on the A1065. Not a very pretty town to drive through, but the walk next to the river is lovely.

That could well be the reason. The Android version stopped updating years ago and the Chrome browser stopped a while later after it didn't have an up to date Android to install on.

That sounds at least as feasible as Theo's suggestion. I guess it's not going to get better so I shall just put up with it and use DuckDuckGo until so much more of it fails to work and I have to chuck it away.

Thanks,

:^)

Many years ago I used to drive through Brandon on a pretty regular basis. In those days I was collecting musical instruments for repair from the American school on Lakenheath Air Base. Or delivering them back, mended. Or both.

What version of Android do you have?

The current Firefox works back to 5. If you're on something older then Firefox 68 runs on 4.1 or later:

It is worse than you think. Facebook now unilaterally rejects me for being a robot whenever I attempt to sign in. They reckon I am typing so fast I must be a robot.

All I'm doing is using a Gateway Anykey keyboard It allows you to assign strings of text to each key of the keyboard. Worked fine until about 6 months ago.

Although it has a programmable repeat rate for a simple key held down it doesn't alter the rate for programmed keys.

Unless anyone knows better!

Oops. Strings of key-combinations

Remember. A sex toy is not just for Christmas...

Sorry, that's dogs isn't it.

You're not supposed to be having sex with dogs at Christmas or at any other time of the year. Ooops! Sorry! Wrong newsgroup!

Version 5.1 so that's a definite possibility. Thanks for that, Theo!

Your old phone has a trojan on it

That's strange. I use a script triggered by a keyboard short-cut to log me in and it doesn't think I'm a robot.
