We have a metal filter and a J cloth still works wonders.
Lay it above the metal filter, clip back into place and then change the J cloth at regular intervals.
This, of course, is the weak part of the plan.
If you forget (as we do) to regularly cycle the filters through the dishwasher then you are also likely to forget to remove the J cloth.
