Gas fires

I want to swap gas fires, one house to another. I have a mate who is Corgi registered but works for a company and therefore he can't issue a ticket because they have unique numbers. One of the houses is to be sold, does it require a gas safety ticket or can he do it legally?

TIA

Heh!

Why not ask the corgi registered(allegedly)mate?

Provided you own both the houses, and are not renting them, you can do the work yourself provided you are "competent".

Your mate shouldn't do it for you as, being a gas fitter, he will be presumed to be doing it for remuneration, and he will not be covered by his employer's CORGI registration. (It might also be a sackable offence for your mate if he is freelancing in competition with this employer.)

If you're selling the house which the fire is going into, it would be wise to get it done by a CORGI. You don't need a safety certificate[1], but the consequences of selling a house with an unsafe appliance are horrendous.

Even if you remove it from the house yourself, you must still comply with the gas safety regs and note especially that the fire connection will need to be capped off - you can't just leave an open-ended stoptap.

Ed Sirret's postings have the URL to the gas installation etc FAQs.

[1] You could always get a "landlord's" safety check on the to-be-sold house; the buyer's solicitor may ask for one anyway.
