Installed only 4 years ago and only had littleuse and now will not strike up. You can hold thelever down to bring up the pilot light, but on releasingthe lever, instead of the fire bursting into life, the pilot lightjust goes out.The gas engineer who installed it thinks it might bea thermostat problem and proposes to charge £90 toreplace it and then, if still a problem, to chargea further £190 to change the gas valve. (And willnot give a reduced quote to replace both anywaydespite that a large part of the effort involvedwould be common to both operations)THis is on top of already having paod £!60 this yearfor the service and replacement of the front barsupporting the coals.I'm loth to spend money when the cause of the faultremains unknown lest the total money paid this yearwould exceed the cost of a completely new fire.Does anyone have experience of this particular gas fireand its faults?

Thermocouple failure is most likely. Bad gas valve a lot less likely. ISTR paying around £6 for the last thermocouple.NT

Yes I think common sense is in order, but I was always a bit timid around gas devices. For a start there always did seem to be a residue of the gas smell in the house even when the powers that be passed it all as good. Since I got rid of Gas completely no more smell. Brian

I used to smell that back when I was a kid (in my grandmother's house - we didn't have gas where I lived). But that was when they actually had boilers and fires which took the air in from the room, so it could blow back in. Now they all have balanced flues and take the air from outside, gas can't get into the house. I'm not sure if I was smelling gas or burned gas as to me they're identical.

So since there's no gas smell nowadays, if I was to make a mistake with the piping, I'd know as I'd smell it.
