fitting pigs ear handrail

Do you know the materials of the solid wall? Age / type of house might provide a clue.

Not for a pig's ear one, but for a metal one of nearly 4m, I used four L brackets, each with three 50mm stainless screws into lengths of 12mm dowelling no-more-nailed into the wall ... it has managed to take my full weight when I tripped over junk stored on the stairs

So I'd drill and use a similar number of fixings, with some allowance for how much thickness of the rail the screws will be passing through.

The last one I did I fixed with 4" 12 gage screws into brown wall plugs

- used about 1 screw per metre. Counter drilled the handrail a bit so that I could hide the screw holes with wood plugs pared flush with a chisel.

er coat advice on size and length of screws, size colour of rawl plugs to u se and size of hole for rawl plugs. thank you.

If it's really a solid wall, 3.5" screws into brown wallplugs in 7mm holes should be good. You'd need to trim the lips off the 1st plugs & insert 2 pe r hole, tap them in with hammer & cut off any protrusion. Ensure the screws are a firm fit, if not, remove them, tap in matchsticks & refit screws.

If the masonry is a little prone to crumbliness you'll need to put glue in the holes before the plugs. If very crumbly, drill hole, remove all debris, brush in a little PVA, fill with polyfilla or similar & redrill at least 2

-3 days later.

If it's aerated blocks or hollow blocks it'll feel solid but you'd need dif ferent fixings.

Sounds about right for lightweight blocks, certainly good enough for brick / medium blocks. Perhaps re-drill if you find mortar. I don't think "my" browns (Screwfix?) will take 12's though, my suitable ones are blue.
