Currently I'm in this situation:

area had a solid fuel fire in it until recently and I now want to put in a gas fire and then a nice mantel / surround / hearth.So what is needed. Specifically this is a great big space and a gas fire is only small. How does the gas fire connect to the exisiting brick flue? Does all this space need to be filled in or will there be a big void behind the back panel when it is all finished.
Any pointers to sites with pictures of step by step construction would be helpful (I'm not planning on doing this myself - but I'm dying to know what goes on behind the scenes.)
