fire valve for oil fired boiler

Looking at the manual for my boiler, it says the fire valve should be at the tank outlet, which makes sense only oil tanks are always some way from the house for obvious reasons and the capillary is so very delicate. How do people run the capillary from the tank to the boiler without breaking it; particularly as I imagine it must have to run underground and through walls?



Is an acceptable compromise to not have it on the tank but fit it on the outside of the house wall, just before the supply enters the building?

FWIW, mine's inside the house, immediately behind the boiler, where the oil feed enters the house. No-one's ever commented on it, and I have it serviced every year.

That's where ours is. Check the Building Regs of OFTEC. It should be outside certainly but at the tank doesn't really make sense as the pipe from tank to building could be quite away and as you point out the capillary is delicate. Unless well protected it would be far to easy for it to be kinked or crushed preventing the fire valve operating...

There appears to be a pragmatic approach in that a fire valve is better than no fire valve.

Ours used to be inside as the "sea related" cowboys that replaced the boiler for the previous owners couldn't be arsed to fit it outside as that would have taken a bit longer to do. The previous owners wouldn't know what the regulations want and would assume that what ever the "approved OFTEC registered fitters" did was correct, as a great many people do.

The capillary as you call it is something roughly like 8mm with a hefty plastic sheath on the outside enabling it to be buried in concrete and manhandled fairly extensively. That is at least what the oil feed for my boiler consists of - and it does have an isolation valve at the tank as well as near the boiler. Old metal tank replaced about ten years ago.

My setup is slightly odd in that the boiler is conveniently installed in the loft which means there is an interesting Heath-Robinson contraption that pumps the oil up from ground level and a long pipe. If it was done today they would use a tiger loop off the boiler oil pump.

I suspect that is non-compliant since if the boiler is on fire you would not be able to get near it to turn the fuel supply of oil off.

A bit like having the switch to control your cooker on a panel against the wall right behind the flaming chip pan on the ring (and they did make cookers like that once upon a time).

That's not the capillary, that's your oil feed line. The capillary on remote fire valves is 2 or 3mm thick.

Yes, mine is just outside where the supply pipe enters the building and where the current boiler instructions say it should be located.

Did. Can't find it. There's a device called a TigerLoop though...
