The effects are much more spectacular when they do it at speed. It happens pretty much every week on the A19(T).

Tough place to be a lamp standard or a sign post. They typically end up either uprooted and flattened to the ground or snapped off or folded and embedded in the roof of the car that hit them.

You should be able to see the ground and the side of your vehicle in your side mirrors if you are manouvering in a very tight space.

Conversely you should be able to see vehicles in them that are trying to hide in your blind spots when driving normally.

The simplest trick is 1" self adhesive foam rubber strip or expended polystyrene on potential contact points of the door frame. That will squeak if you touch it without damaging the paintwork. Low tech but effective.

Ideally, yes but remember the mirror was already inside the lock-up garage which is quite dark when the impact occurred so I don't think seeing the garage floor would have helped much. Sometimes you are entering with less than one inch to spare between the door post and the outside of the mirror. For that reason I drive hard up towards the right, which is infallible in a straight line but not if there is curvature, as there was here because someone had decided to place a large camper van opposite.

That case is very difficult to provide a reliable solution. You are likely to be impacting a corner rather than a flat surface so the usual restricted number of sensors is not going to help. And your vehicle may well be curved in two dimensions so "sight line" solutions are difficult.

Get a Leaf it has 360% radar/cameras and squeels if anything gets too close to its precious paintwork.

My brother has one so I will ask for a demonstration. However, between himself and his wife I think they have collided with the garage at least three times now.

Obviously the garage to blame. Demolish it or have it exorcised.

How about some pics so the problem may be properly assessed and ridicule/sympathy can be given in an informed manner?

He has done better and is moving house.

I regret that I'm not sure how to post them. The problem is that it looks easy enough in a photo but when someone parks a large camper van opposite it can be a real challenge. I can't do much about the van as it is in an authorised parking space.
