Yes. You clearly need mesh that's bigger than the inside diameter of the pot. What's unclear is how much bigger.

Did you measure the original mesh?

JL do one that might work for you. 5-8 cup filter is 9.6cm diameter.

A more honest desription would have said "90mm when flat - fits an 85mm coffee pot"

It sounds like the seller insn't going to agree that it isn't per the description. You can appeal to Ebay but you probably won't win.

However, you can return it for a refund under the Distance Selling Regs

- but you may have pay the return postage.

It's always a good idea to check the fine details with the seller before purchase if there's any possibility that an item may not fit.

I'm currently thinking that if the 85mm mesh has an additional 5mm added, then maybe the 9cm version would be 9.5cm.

What you write is so true, and I'll remember these point during future purchases. This project is seeming like an expensively disappointing business, when considering that there are mounds of french press coffee pots in the charity shops, priced at around £2 a go.

I have a similar French Press coffee pot. The internal diameter of the pot is close to ~95mm, whereas the mesh screen is 100mm when flattened out. When inserted into the pot, the mesh screen turns up around the edge and is held against the inner surface of the pot by the circular spring that fits above it in the plunger. A smaller pot that I have has internal diameter about ~68mm, with a mesh of 74mm when flat. So in both cases the mesh screen is ~5 to 6mm greater in diameter than the inside of its respective pot.

As it is basically a (porous) pressure seal, I think trying to find a third party match is a tricky endeavour. I've done this in the past and found that seemingly equivalently-fitting plungers don't actually form a correct pressure seal in the 'wrong' jug, and the quality of the seal directly affects the quality of the coffee. I think some big brands will sell replacement mesh but no chance if it's an off-brand pot.

I would be tempted to buy a few of those charity shop ones and try them out. It's possible the seal is knackered on some of them, but maybe eventually one or other is in good shape.

Amazon has a huge variety of them. I think your +5mm diameter is close to 'perfect as it gets'.

You will have to carefully swage the edges over before inserting...Or it will leak.

I got a refund for the original problem purchase. Now I just need to clarify if the John Lewis option finishes at 9.6 cm or 10.1cm.
