clamp meters and dishwashers

Hello,



My dishwasher has broken. First the motor seized (thanks for the help in my other thread) but now the machine is not spraying. It's a Zanussi with an integrated water management system (IWMS) and apparently these had a bad reputation for getting blocked. I'm not sure if this is what has happened and if so, I'm now sure why/how it has happened because it was fine before the motor broke and (obviously) it hasn't been used since.



There are two solenoid valves on the IWMS and I wondered about getting a clamp probe to fit to my DMM so that I could see whether the valves are operating. Are the clamps bulky though, because obviously I would need to test it in situ and might not have much room?



I see some clamps claim to measure DC. How does that work? I thought only very expensive models could do that?



I don't know whether to buy a new IWMS and accept that every 5 years it will block and need replacing or whether to buy a better designed machine. If I go with the replacement option, what does the group recommend: Bosch and Miele?



I've looked at the Bosch web site and it claims Logixx are the top models and Exxcel is midrange. Are the Exxel really that inferior? Should I avoid them? The reason I ask is that there only appears to be on Logixx freestanding, full size, model available, so if I could include the Exxcel, it would give me more choice. Also, the prices for Exxcel and Logixx seem to be roughly the same, so I am wondering whether build quality and reliability are as close as their prices?



The Logixx does away with a cutlery basket and has a third drawer at the top. This sounds like a good idea but some reviews claim that this reduces headroom and is a bad thing. Has anyone experienced this?



Last of all, I'm confused by the energy ratings, which now seem to go up to a+++. Should these be taken with a pinch of salt? It seems they are for the economy programme, so aren't they irrelevant if you don't use that programme and use the "normal" 65C wash instead?



Some reviews have suggested that the more frugal 6L machines do not get the plates clean and that manufacturers have sacrificed performance to get a better rating on their label. Has anyone found this with Bosch?



I'm thinking Bosch might be a good compromise as I think a £700 Miele is beyond my budget.

I don't really see how a clamp meter will help you diagnose the problem, any more than simply checking the voltage appearing across the solenoid and simply listening to see if it clicks open.

I can only test it with the tank in place (otherwise there would be water everywhere!) With the tank fitted, the solenoids are on the "inside" so I cannot hear them. There are two next to each other, so I think it would be hard to distinguish which one is clicking open. There is some water flowing and I think the noise of the water might drown out the noise of the solenoids.

I can't check the voltage at the terminals because the connectors are insulated, hence I thought a clamp would be useful but it would have to fit in the space behind the tank. I suppose I could disconnect the terminal block and test the voltage at the terminals of that though.

Clamp meters usually read high currents.

I don't know anything about washing machines, but a solenoid valve will become magnetised when it is active, such that an allen key or similar will stick to it to give you an indication that it has closed.

Neither current flow, nor voltage across a solenoid, or checking for magnetism will guarantee that the solenoid valves are actually opening, only water flow will prove that.

True, but checking there is a current or voltage proves the fault is at the solenoid and not before it.

Washing up bowl from a pound shop, and just five minutes to wash by hand is far qucker than pissing about stacking a dishwasher (which is far better employed in the workshop anyway)

Get some thin insulated wire, maybe 10/0.1 trap this between the two mating parts of the connector, connect to a meter outside.

If the wires to the solenoid are accessible and separable, you can sense mains with a volt stick.

I have had a sensitive DC clamp meter from Pico (attaches to a normal DVM) for at least ten years. I think I have used it about once.

A direct drive machine from LG. Nice design, big door, amazingly quiet (amazingly so), easy user interface and the lack of half the bits that go wrong in most machines should bode well for longevity.

Why bother with that? Just buy ten bowls for a pound and toss them out when used.
