CFLs and UHF interference

after you have repalced your suspension joints or teh thrird time, you ask yousrelf how much extra fuel you have burned

- trying to slow down for the bloody things and accelerate backl to

30mph afterwards

- manufacturing all the spare parts you need/.

Not to mention the horrific accident I witnessed that was CAUSED by a chicane. Carefully positioned as to be invisible to a driver following another car at a perfectly safe and legal speed and distance.

Ah. The 'Men from the Ministry' solution.

"I have solved London's congestion problem!"

"How?"

"I've made all the roads one way out of town!"

It was funny when I first heard it in what - the 70s'; These days I fulluousness any day now.

Jerry,

if you have no answer beyond insults we can only assume you have no evidence for your claims.

I WISH the bloody things were all wired like they are in some cars: that is when you switch the ignition OR the headlights OFF, they wont come on again without manual intervention.

Only the car at the head of the queue really needs front foglamps: the rest are better following the one in front. Till it ends up ain a ditch anyway.

Oh: interesting trick I discovered on vehiclkes with adjustable hedalamps: in fog, try various combinations of high/low beam and headlamp positions. I found that on two here a rather 'over compensated for load I didn't have' main beam was optimal.

in a nutshell they are.

They didn't stop, or start. Its always been a sort of model to model thing: like having column shifts and pull out 'parking brakes' on the bench front seat things: then they went to autos, and the column shift became a gear selector, and the parking brake - handbrake not needed for hill starts anymore - became a foot brake probably to get it out of the way.

Americans liek a big frnt bench seat to squeeze their enormous butts onto, and a floor unobstructed by clutter. So the brake generally goes down the side of the front seatr, but if you are fat, even thats a bugger to reach,so its generally a pedal.

Which no one uses, because teh trasmission locks in 'park'. and the torque convertor does the hill starts.

To write off one car like that - bad luck. Two - well, you'd think he'd take more care. But FOUR? I'm pretty sure by that stage part of *my* PDI would be to check for the known fault in the gearbox...

Andy

do you happen to know if there are restrictions on how close to the front of the car headlights have to be?

It seems to me there may be aerodynamic restrictions caused just by light regulations.

Andy

You could well be right, but fog lamps are designated as being focussed lamps whose centre is less than 24 inches from the ground. Colour of light does not come into it.

If it has been changed, it will only be to accommodate the change from inches to CMs.

Usually in front of any metal bits at the front of the car, so as to cause the lights to shine forwards.

???

Dave

I seem to remember that there is a maximum distance that the lights have to be from the edge, but I don't think there was ever anything about how far recessed they could be.

I saw a Ford or possibly rover 3.0/3.5 and auto box fitted to an MG Midget once Jerry.

Anything is possible if you are prepared to do the necessary.

Obviously you wouldn't and couldn't, but you shouldn't tar others with the same brush.

I dont suppose you could change a MkII Escort clutch in 17minutes 24 seconds either. But I used to know someone who got 'mechanic of the rally' award for doing just that. On his back at 2 am in the mud.

I've got a spitfire..with a 1300 back axle and gearbox mated to a dolly

1500 engine. Uses a clutch plate from a morris 1000. Inlets manifold is from something else..forget what - and the carbs are off something yet again, rejetted .

In fact that car is probably made from at least 10 donors. Got power brake unit of a ford galaxy i think..GT6 front disks..I always wanted to put a Nissan 200 turbo engine and transmission in, but life's too short.

I got the impression the three other cars were innocent bystanders rather than faulty volvos...

For low drag you want the front of the car as low and smooth as possible. Now if you are required to be 2ft high 2ft from the front of the car for the lights there are strict limits on how low you can make the front of the car, which must surely affect drag.

Have a look at this modern Audi le Mans racer

you'll see that (for aerodynamics) the front is limited only by the height of the wheel arches and the driver's knees. I doubt the mirrors are 2ft off the ground - imagine what the shape would be if there were fixed headlights above the front wheels.

Pop-ups BTW were a fix used by some - Mazda's MX5 probably the most mass-market - but crash test legislation has largely killed that, and compulsory "headlights on all the time" would kill it completely.

Andy

I thought we'd gone amber by law long before then.

Its patently obvious that ":Jerry:" is a man with one brain cell who is used to waving it around in a company of those who have none at all.

No Volvo is an innocent bystander.

They are all guilty.

Good grief, life's too short as it is ! Quite honestly flying these days is a miserable drawn out process that takes up most of the day (the only straight forward bit is being in the air). Is it really worth top and tailing that with the palaver of coach travel, and getting to/from your local bus station, (assuming you don't live next door to it).

Reading this thread, I'm beginning to think I'm far too casual and reckless about life.
