Car dash cameras

I recently went with the Nextbase 422GW as recommended by Which?

Seems to be fine, but I have not really played with it.

Nextbase range of cameras are the most recommended. I have the the 622GW with rear camera pretty much feature packed although I have not had time to fully play around with it so far. Quite impressed with the image quality which at the end of the day is the most important factor.

I would suggest choosing based on how it will look on the windscreen - assume the picture quality will be okay.

You can get ones which fit over the rear view mirror which may be less intrusive?

Nextbase are a good brand and have very good customer service if you have any queries or problems.

Be aware that you can get special Micro SD memory cards suited to dashcams - they are designed to stand up to the constant writing and re-writing that dashcams do

I bought a next base 112 on ebay for around £24, quite happy with it and easy to set up.

Get one that catches the rear view too. Invaluable if you like sending clips of morons on their phones to your local constabulary.

I don't know about special as in "specific for", but you do need a high speed card for HD recording.

My Nextbase dashcam + branded SD Card from Amazon wouldn't work with the card. Turned out to be a pirate substandard one. Amazon replaced it without comment, suggesting it's a common issue.

Unless you buy a particulary bad one that gets 2* reviews you should be OK. Mine was about £50 random brand full HD decent with fast lens on it.

That is about the only thing where they differ. Some do better low light images and sharper images than others (that is worth having).

When you attach it make sure that the pivot usually a ball and socket is firmly tightened. Otherwise the first time you have to do an emergency stop you will get a picture of the sky. My nearest ever miss with a deer ending up 10cm off the nearside bonnet and all I got was its ears.

I assume you leave them in place when you leave/part the car? The bad boys are not tempted?

Possibly so cheap now that they have no resale value if stolen.

Nextbase are held on the bracket by a magnet. You just slide it off. Dead easy.

Sometimes the hassle is disconnecting the power whist still trying to keep the power lead neat and hidden inside the roof lining etc.

After a while the new toy is less of a novelty and more of an annoyance if being removed every time you get out of the car. I guess that most people with a after market dash cam leave it there 24/365.

Though I'm at a loss to work out, how a blob stuck to the windscreen is "completely hidden from view" (second picture)

Except for an MOT. If it's anywhere in your field of view, it's a fail.

The first time my car had an MOT the garage phoned to say it would fail if they didn't remove the dashcam, so I told them to take it off. The daftest thing about this is that it is completely hidden by the sun visor! So if that's down it blocks far more than the dashcam does. Add to that the car's central camera/sensor console, which blocks even more from your field of view through the windscreen, and it all makes even less sense.
