How do you know that - for example - a discerning person did not spot the camera and decide not to smash your headlights until there was a really dark and foggy night?

No, But the car is used several times daily so we've had no battery issues.

The batteries are only good for about two hours, and they say that somewhere (mine is a 512GW but I bet they all use the same cheap battery). Over time I found it wasn't even holding that charge, and obtained/fitted a replacement from eBay.

I wired mine in permanently. Didn't take long and it's nice and neat.

If you mean the cam, I didn't deliberately hide it. It is just very small, compact, fits very close to the screen and there are no visible cables. All of which just makes it very discrete, almost invisible, unless it's pointed out to you that it is there.

Fair point if you never park your car outside at night. So I'll amend my question to "...a discerning person did not spot the camera one sunny, summer's day and and decide not to smash your headlights until a chilly autumn day when they could justify wearing a scarf and hoody?"
