Can I catch up?

Just been working away from newsgroup access for a few days and now see the odd thread that I would like to read from the beginning. Trouble is I can only see messages going back a couple of days. Is there a way of viewing older messages?

Loading thread data ...

Assuming you've set your Newsreader to download the maximum number of headers possible - the default may be quite low, the rest depends on how much retention your NewsServer offers. This will also depend on how busy the group is. UK-D-I-Y is quite busy. Whereas with a server like Giganews, with moribund groups you can read messages going back years

Google Groups - advanced search is best:

for reading and catching up if your News Server doesn't go back far enough, but GG can mangle replies and break threading in some newsreaders.

A decent newsreader gives the option of how far back to go. Of course this depends on how far back the server keeps stuff.

Get a decent newsreader like Agent, and sample headers back as far as you like.

Tools

Get next N headers

(Tools Options Read has a spinner which enables you to change the value of N, up to 1000)

Only if they have not expired from the server you are on basically.

But be advised that if a poster puts X-BNoarchive or whatever it is in the first line its not saved at google.

I have just tried that very option, it worked, thank you. I had spotted it before but assumed that "get next 100 headers" meant it would get new ones not get older ones! Is it just me?
