We had a furniture store here that had a lot of small flats above it. A slightly pompous colleague moved into one (think we had just divorced) and said how good it was.

Then he found out that all the other flats were used by 'working girls'.

Oh, years later I was talking to an elderly neighbour (tough old girl although she looked frail, used to be a pub landlady in a rough area). I idly mentioned that these flats were occupied by aforementioned working girls (we'd been discussing the brothel in my back garden, which I've mentioned previously).

"Oh", she said, "my aunt lived there for quite a while". Major embarrassment and I started to apologise. "No need to apologise", she replied, "I thought she was up to something like that".

Well fancy that.

I've never worked in that building. It's a strange thing but I think I worked in more buildings in central London than I did in Donny.

Well somebody has over the years been putting your name on plenty of TV distribution gear in the town.

BTW I got the coax through the lead pipe. I'll guess the standing water in the pipe that poured out onto the new ceiling panels in the mains room had been there for at least 20 years:-) We always have access to spare tiles.

I'm not saying I didn't do much in Donny; I'm saying I did more in other places. I did very little for DMBC. But I did Donny Rugby Club, Stenson Ct, HMP Doncatraz, Waterdale flats, Mt Pleasant, Miller Bros HQ, flats at the end of Sprotty Rd where it meets York Rd, various schools, St James flats, Home Covert, Travis Gdns. These are the ones I can recall.

But the secret is in choosing what channels they can watch.

Waterdale Flats does surprise me. I know the place well but have never seen a TV distribution set up in there.

The flats are in several blocks and my main work was in the ones right above the main shopping centre (which now consists of an Iceland, a Greggs, several charity shops and empty shops).

I believe it got new owners last month.

Yes, I'm talking about Kingsgate and Queensgate. It was early 1980s I think. If you walk along the pavements in there and look at the walls of the flats you can see the tap-off units and trunk cables. The taps were the Labgear 9000 series. When I worked there there was a terrible problem with condensation in some of the flats. The manager was Mr Plevey, a relation of Plevey's Garden Centre.

My sister lives very near so I drive past often. I see the original aerials are still there. Usually in such places the management agent's aerial man replaces my perfectly good aerial for no genuine reason as soon as he is let loose on the system, and the replacement is always inferior to the original.

Paul went to a system we installed a few years ago the other day, because he works for the newly-appointed management agent. It's in a difficult area for terrestrial reception so I had fitted a good aerial at a strategic and inconvenient location where it wasn't screened by another building, and channel filters, etc. Paul found my aerial still in existence but disconnected. The system was fed by one of those short boom 'high gain' things that have lousy directional characteristics, fitted in the most convenient place and looking straight at a brick wall. The channel filters had been removed so all sorts of crap was getting in. Basically Paul's job was to reconnect the original aerial and fit new filters.
