Thunderbird - unless you want binaries, in which case Newsleecher, but you have to subscribe.
What is it you're hoping to improve, over Xnews?

However
I'm using a portable version of Thunderbird (but not on this Linux computer) so if being able to stay up to date with usenet when using multiple computers would be an advantage, you could consider that. It sits on a memory stick and works on any Windows computer I plug it into.
