Best computer for old geezer?

Will you just STFU about this stupid Linux suggestion of yours? You've already wasted four hours of my time looking into it and I've already told you it's TOTALLY UNSUITABLE for the elderly gent in question. Enough already.

Dave,

Dagenham, UK

You?re arguing with a man so stupid he thinks medical conditions are binary in severity.

Tim

The OP said he wanted a desktop computer. Ipad isnt a desktop computer

Wanker

She isn't suffering from macular degeneration then - she is blind

And cannot use a visual interface

Probably comes from being an onanist like her son...

NO, its TOTALLY UNSUITABLE for *you*. You cant even put a DVD in a drive and boot it. ergo you cant support a computer.

Do your old geezer a favour and tell him you are nearly as computer illiterate as he is and to find someone else

No you are arguing with a man who likes to point out to wankers like you that medical conditions are *not* binary in severity.

*You* said large text is no good for macular degeneration. Not that large text is no good for people who cannot recognise the faces of people standing in front of them - i.e. who are blind.

There comes a point where the old adage is true

"Put the computer back in its box and send it back to where yoy biught it" "why?" "Because you are simply too stupid to own a computer"

An Apple IPAD is just perfect for you. You will spend thousands, Apple will make a huge profit, of which I will get a part because seeveral of my funds invest in them to take money out of your pocket and put it into mine, and the world will continue to ignore you, and you can feel 'empowered' becauseu you can 'use a computer'

How long have you had Alzheimer?s for?

?An old pal of mine (just turned 80) is *very* computer illiterate and really struggles like hell with keeping Windows running on his PC. He really needs something which looks after itself and requires bare minimal user maintenance.?

No mention of *wanting* a PC.

Tim

I said no use for someone with *severe* macular degeneration.

Do keep up.

Tim

Again you?re so stupid you only think in binary. She is severely visually impaired. Weirdly, she can read number-plates.

You really have lost it?.

Tim

No point in doing that.

Non sequitur.

Of course it is. And what matters is that it can do what the op wants to do.

The mobile phone capability is an option.

In fact it works fine with Win systems and android tablets too.

And can now do facetime with android devices too.

Ultimately, my mother only had peripheral vision. Her ophthalmologist said it was macular degeneration. She was registered as partially sighted, not blind.

No, plenty don?t do email at all now and plenty who do do it online and so that doesn?t need to be setup on the system used for email.

But has a massive problem with getting help when it stops working.

Not the case with an ipad, the worst that might be needed is to take it back to the store where it was bought and have them fix it.

Actually no.

Firsly it doesnt 'stop working'

secondly there is actually far *more* chance of someone online having the answer than there is with a closed source system.

the tens of thousands of people supporting linux, some of whom are paid extremely well to do it, have no reason not to help end users.

Bullshit.

More bullshit. Vastly more online with ipads.

Millions using ipads who have much more of a clue than you do.

some of whom are paid

Fat lot of use that is when the system isn't working.

That is the whole point of an iPad, it has an OS matched to the hardware. It doesn't have to cater for every module and chipset in the universe.

It is a learning curve to get the best out of configuring any operating system, including installation.

A learning curve is not required to know how to discover and hit an icon with a mouse pointer. The basic applications are similar cross platform.

I'd have no issues setting up a novice user with a system built on Linux that looks like Windows XP.

If they start complaining, then I send them in the direction of Apple.

Then I never hear from them :-)
