Another phone bill and another phone call

maybe. Older folks IMHO more likely to wait til end of an answering m/c message and then say "Joyce are you there" etc etc before hanging up.

Early on in the beginning of his dementia, my father would try to hold a conversation with the built-in announcement explaining that he wanted to talk to his son, would she please put him through etc. I thought I had better change the announcement to one I had recorded but this only ended up with him getting really annoyed because I wouldn't answer his questions...

The term is 'chargeable calls and inclusive calls'. Free calls are the in the inclusive bit, so that would be OK.

Also the following phrase from the price list does not make any distinction between types of calls, just that you have to make them.

"In order to be eligible, Consumer customers must make at least 6 calls, ( excludes calls made with BT Broadband Talk ), with BT per quarter. Should these calls not be made, a charge of £7.77(Inc VAT) per quarter will be applied for the Caller Display service. Business customers are excluded from the BT Privacy At Home package."

I've been stung by that penalty charge in the past when I switched all calls out (by Carrier Pre Select) to another provider & me signed up to BT privacy. It made me switch back (and use 1899.com during the day).

"BT Privacy helps stop unwanted sales calls by registering you with the Telephone Preference Service and giving you BT Caller Display at no extra charge. From 1st October 2006, customers who do not make some chargeable calls with BT will be charged for BT Caller Display. Customers with other call providers can still benefit from BT Caller Display at no extra cost if the following calls are made. Customers who are billed monthly must make at least two chargeable calls with BT in that month, other wise BT reserves the right to charge =A32.59 a month for BT Caller Display. Customers who are billed every three months must make at least six chargeable calls within those three months, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge =A37.77 a quarter. If you do not currently make calls with BT and would like to start making your calls with us again, please call 0800 121 8088. Alternatively, if you'd like to make one-off calls that are chargeable to your BT bill then simply dial the numbers 1280 before you dial the phone number you wish to call."

So make 6 calls to a mobile. All calls to mobiles are chargeable by BT.

We get it with Talktalk on their cheapest calling plan.

i.e. you pay for it as part of the plan....

We didn't pay any extra when it was added to the plan, that's free to me.

Any BT scheme that includes free calls is a "plan" in which case the caller ID isn't free then, either.
