That's certainly true.
According to a report in Hansard, the number of deaths as a result of fixed wiring has doubled over the period since it came into being.

I have rung round builders that were happy to do work for me in the past when I was restoring houses, and now they wont do the same work. This is due to the onerous Part P. many samll 'one man' builders have simply decided to take early retirement!
Philip
No but you must have an opinion whether the law is needed or not. If you like Part P then fair enough but if you disagree then what harm would it do you to oppose it?
And that is a very big part of the problem. Do you think that the Public at large really understand the implications of Part P until it comes down to selling their house? That nice bloke put our shower in and it works fine and, no, he said that it did not need any inspection/certification as he has been installing them for years.
The only beneficiary seems to be the legal profession here.
Well, we agree on something. How do you suggest we get bad laws changed into better ones without, at least, complaining and lobbying.
Done.
Perhaps others could 'spread the word' about this in any other diy forums they frequent?
Roger, assuming you're a 'Today' regular to have heard about this, please do come back and tell us what the outcome of the vote was!
David
They always did that.
I know some plumbers who did their own electrics, but don't now.
Done.
The sales of bell wire must have dropped off then.
Yes, but it would be very easy to change Part P into a good law, and as it's regulations (delegated legislation) wouldn't need any parliamentary time.
Owain
This is only the nomination phase. The top six? will then be put to the vote.
Owain
Will you please eff off as you are a total plantpot.
Done.
There's also this:
Though one wonders whether there is any point.....
Alan
It's also another of New Labour's laws of unintended consequences. In order to avoid the need for permanent installations to be inspected, people will be encouraged to do lash-ups with extension leads etc. - causing much more dangerous problems than those which the legislation sets out to address.
Will do. I only hear a bit of the Today programme each day - while shaving - but this type of thing tends to be covered during my listening 'window'.
I like Part P.
There most likely isn't any but when you only have to "pay" a little effort for the bet the value is very high. If it was to have some result then that would be quite a thrill I think. Better bet than all this cr*p we write here :-)

Then you won't be supporting my suggestion - as is your prerogative.
But, as usual, you're in a minority of one within this NG!
If you look at dribble's history under various names you'll realise he hasn't clue about anything electrical. Typical plumber, in fact. So happy enough since it doesn't intrude on his little world. Of course he doesn't think the same about CORGI...
It's very interesting though. Thanks,
Mary
Just dun it!
Not sure if it will get a mention, tho'. Do the fat cats at the Bebb do DIY?
