Age-Related Aches and Pains

Is this something you've seen on You Tube?

So do you have any good recipes for breakfast and lunch? Ideally ones that don't need much prep?

I tried the ryvita with a pack of pate and it was a nice lunch - but 653 based on the smallest pack of pate Sainsburys express at Charing Cross sold (ie not very small).

I'd have been happy with half the pate on the same number of ryvita - so looking at Ocado now to see what I can order and maybe divide at home and take the right size in to start with...

I'm sure there are a few other toppings that could work well too...

The main thing the public have realised over the last 20 years is that you don't get what you pay for. The quality at "the discounters" (as the media insists on calling them) is at least as good as the main supermarkets and IME rather better. Also, I no longer trust Sainsburys with their complicated pricing. They're trying to trip me up and I refuse to play their silly games

I use a quarter of the square Sainsburys pack on four Ryvita. It's still piled on, not just a smear. But that's at home right now as I'm on holiday!

Sainsbury's low fat cheddar is OK - not marvellous, but good with Marmite added. Also various cooked meats - just read the pack. I usually have butter - not a lot of difference between that and the various 'margarine' things and it makes it much nicer and therefore more attractive.

A really low one is Laughing Cow Light - but not so satisfying.

SWMBO did burgers the other night. My concession was to have two burgers (quarter pounders) in one bun. Even had chips, but she spoiled it by serving up onion rings!

Co-Op do some reasonable 'lower fat' sandwiches if I don't have anything with me.

I've got myself a small coolpack (already have icepacks).

I'll decant at home and bring my portion - see how that works out. Means I can pop a few misc things in, couple of pickles and some tomatoes.

I noticed Primula cheese-toothpaste (which I happened to like) is no worse than pate too.

I should have said that these ar accompanied by sliced cucumber (usually) and/or spring onion. Or similar.

Reading this sub thread, reminds me of the conversation with a friend after telling her about a theatre trip. Her classic phrase was "don't tell me about the play, tell me about the food at lunch time"! We went, by accident, to a very nice steak house in Charing Cross road, where the food and service were good, at a reasonable price.

Since this thread seems to draw in a lot of interesting comments unrelated to DIY, I'd love to hear others' experiences of eating and specifically tofu. After my heart bypass op in 2013 my BIL, a doctor in Hamburg, suggested I go vegetarian and eat lots of tfu. He even sent me several tins of tofu-based spreads, all of which were totally disgusting, The Germans are really in to their health food, but tofu? Yuk! (I'm still not sure whether he was taking the pi...)

Besides, Sainsbury's is NOT cheap at all, despite all their recent adverts that they also do price matching. I don't think I've ever seen any product on their shelves (special offers excepted) that were cheaper than Tesco/Asda/Morrison. Many Sainsbury's products are 20p or more dearer. For exactly the same product, e.g. boil-in-the-bag kippers.

What on earth's wrong with onion rings!!

They're delicious!

I love onions.

Oh yes! I've loved Primula from the tube since before it came in tubes and was packed in those funny half-hexagon packs.

My favourite tubed one is the prawn. Get Aldi's multigrain crackers, squirt a small piece on to a cracker, then make a 'sandwich' with another cracker on top. Two of them for elevenses with a cup of Aldi's cappuccino go down a treat! But the calories....!

Unfortunately so do I. But I'm sticking to ones without batter.

You need to get thee to a chinese restaurant - proper tofu is yummy :)

You can cook it in soup, deep fry it (though I doubt your doctor had that in mind). They even do a red tofu which is their version of black pudding!

Agreed but you really need to find the one or three proper chinese restraunts in a China Town area of a big city. The restraunts that the local chinese population use for their good nights out birthday, aniversarys etc.

Aye, I think for most western palats tofu is lacking in texture and flavour. Also the Cauldron Foods isn't that good as far as tofu is concerned. The carton Yutaka "Japanese Style Silken Tofu" (red and black packaging) is far better, there is another carton one as well, mainly white packaging, but not tried that one yet.

You do need to press it for quite a while with moderate pressure to get as much water out as possible. Four or five sheets of kitchen roll on a plate, already drained tofo block, more kitchen roll, another plate and all your scale weights, couple of pounds or so, on top. Check after 15 mins change kitchen roll another 15 mins, check etc.

I like tofu, although the thought of a tofu spread is not appealing to me at all.

I first had it cubed as part of a mixed salad in the US many years ago. Try buying a block of it. Plain might be too bland for you, but it comes with various added flavours too.

And it takes external flavours well - it'll marinade in lemon, chilli, soy - or anything else. Or maybe eat with with some dip?

Slice it thinly, then fry in sunflower oil while adding soy sauce. Who needs bacon?

Cheers

I've had some kind of fake cream cheese stuff made based on Tofu that was ok, but no generally not.

Yes plain is rather bland, but it marinades well .

The smoked ones tend to have a good savoury flavour - I don't like the current Cauldron one so much, but Waitrose sell a nice one with added sesame seeds and stuff

Sorry, but your menu hasn't persuaded me! (I've just had a delicious crabmeat and creamed corn soup from a local Chinese takeaway, so the thought of tofu as an alternative doesn't exactly fill me with enthusiasm.)

All the ones I tried from the tins my BIL sent me tasted bland. I gave all the unopened tins to a niece who is a committed veggie.
