Ah, thank you Adam, that is probably why there are none in this part of the world

Every half hour? Here we have one bus a day!

The MCB. should trip at around 10-20A

Wish I could do that with my students ;-)

Size of the metal blown out between the blades of the snips?

A common misconception it seems :-)

MCBs do not limit current. They trip in a time inversely proportional to the overcurrent. In the time before they trip, the magnitude of that overcurrent is limited only by the fault loop impedance.

So a 6A MCB will typically carry 10A for about 10 mins. 20A should trip it in no more than about 30 secs. 30A should be enough to trip it on the magnetic part of the trip curve in 0.1 secs.

The fault current on the cable and snips would (in this house at least (ELI/Ze 0.24 ohms) would be around 200 - 900A depending on how far you are from the CU. I suspect in Adam's place, he will be needing a new set of snips!

I bet you live somewhere nice though.

Chavvy areas usually have better bus services. Bus every half hour to Aldi and the VD clinic here.

At one time it was common to find light duty flex used.

But since most can only ever buy/find 13 amp fuses think the regs were changed so all flex should be capable of taking that out in event of a short.

No buses here.

I thought the new regs were 3A or 13A and that's it. Our new FGs came with a IEC lead/cable which has 3x0.75mm embosed on it , the plug has a 13 amp fuse and the IEC connector is rated at 10 Amps. I'd had thought a 3Amp would be fine for the FG but guessing the fuse is for the 'lead/cable' I think the FG has an internal 2amp fuse. Almost everything we buy uses a IEC lead with a 13amp fuse.

It'd probably work for some of them - if you were allowed to.

Well explained.

No mention of needing clean underwear though… ;-)

I'm sure I've seen a few (this century) with 5A or 10A fuses (or perhaps they've been a junk box since the last century) !?

Many of the "Cold" IEC leads are only rated to a maximum of 10A. Some of the dodgier ones, even less.

Thank you, but I've passed it back to its owner.

Even with a 13A fuse it's safer than the guy's microwave oven transformer in a lidless storage box used for fractal burning.
