10 amp fuses - quick moan

Neighbour's Wickes extension lead which I am fixing requires a 10 amp fuse (says so on the reel).

Can I find 10 amp plug fuses anywhere convenient? No. Certainly not Wickes.

Also is 0.9 ohms on a Megger ok for earth continuity for a 20 metre lead?

Would imply a 0.38mm^2 conductor, or dodgy connection?

That's two counties away. I'll maybe risk CEF.

Hmm. Nulling the meter leads and wigging a bit gets down to 0.42 ohm.

10A would suggest it ought to have at least 1mm^2 CSA flex, and for that size you would expect a resistance of 18.1 mOhms/m. So 20m would be ~0.36 ohms.

How does it compare to the resistance of the other cores?

(I take it you took out the test lead resistance?)

Very low Ohm testing, requires extremely good test connections.

Interestingly, although the readings vary a bit, I'm now getting about 0.60 on earth and 0.30 on L (through the fuse) and 0.60 on N.

I know what it's made of inside - little pieces of brass that push-fit together. I've squeezed them all with pliers, and the 2 sockets that didn't work now do work.

Well I have now :)

Tempted to say it'll do. It's not irresponsibly unsafe, especially if I can find a 10 amp fuse.

Same here.

I rarely use it, though, and certainly not since March 2020!

I have 10 amp fuses along with 1A, 2A, and even 7A for plugs in my garage component racks.

Let me know if you'd like me to sell you some 10A fuses plus P&P

Most DVMs don't measure very low resistance accurately. You need specialised equipment for that.

Just put a 5A fuse in it. That will be OK a drill or lamp or whatever you might use on an extension cable.

I think he did say 'megger'

With mine on continuity range, each 100 mΩ graduation is about 1/8" on a log scale so you could read it down to say 20 mΩ. What the actual accuracy is, who knows? it's decades since it was calibrated.

I have some of those old ones must be 20+ years old, think they are grey 7A and black 10amp. Also have a fine selection of 20mm fuses from 50ma to 3.15 amp.

Well its not ideal, but I guess it would run a device or two! Brian

Yes run a lawn mower for half an hour and feel for the warm bit! Brian

Yes just look what happens inside a torch. You bash it and it goes brighter, but of course these days I don't need a torch. Brian

I have eight of them. Let me know if you want a few (free of charge). .

Only 3A (red) and 13A (brown) now. All the others are black.

Stairlifts always seem to be 7A.
